San Diego Chargers - Though we aren’t so sure if the Chargers really have the grit to win the Super Bowl, there is no doubt that these are fantastic odds, all things considered. The Bolts have the easiest road to a division title of any team in football (save perhaps the Saints), and they have the easiest schedule amongst division winners in the game as well this year. There is no excuse not to win at least a dozen games and take a first round bye in the playoffs, and anything less than the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC would be disappointing.
New Orleans Saints - Are the Saints being disrespected as the fifth choice on the board to win the Super Bowl this year? The defending champs have the most explosive offense in the league without a doubt, and much like San Diego, there really shouldn’t be any doubt about the fact that this team is making the playoffs and opening them up with a home game. QB Drew Brees might be the most underrated player in the league, and that’s saying something for a man that just led his team to a Super Bowl title.
Baltimore Ravens - With QB Ben Roethlisberger suspended for the first month of the season, the Ravens have a golden opportunity to get back atop the AFC North. Though this is a team known for its defense, the offense is as strong as it has looked, potentially since the team has moved to Baltimore. The addition of WR Anquan Boldin gives QB Joe Flacco a second huge target to throw to, and with RB Ray Rice and RB Willis McGahee making up one of the most dangerous rushing tandems in the league, scoring 24+ points per game seems like a legitimate possibility.
San Francisco 49ers - Sure, the Niners are a bit of a longshot to win it all, but someone has to win the NFC West, right? San Fran seems like the most likely candidate to get the job done, and it will have a chance in the playoffs just like Arizona did two years ago if it gets there. QB Alex Smith will have a full year with WR Michael Crabtree under his belt, and the offensive line got beefed up through the NFL Draft, as both OLs Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis should become immediate starters.

I typically don’t play the fourth week of NFL pre-season, and other than this one selection, that will be the case again this year; for a number of different reasons I believe the value in this contest is on the home side:
Seattle went 4-0 ATS in the 2009 pre-season; so far this year its gone 1-2 ATS, winning in Week 1, but dropping its last two pre-season tilts.
It lost 24-13 to the Vikes last week; although its defense looked decent, its offense was out of sorts and I believe that will once again be the case in the pre-season finale.
Matt Hasselbeck completed nine of 17 passes for 126 yards; he was sacked twice and hit two other times.
Seattle’s offensive line was a weakness last year, and it continues to be an area of concern that this team will have to deal with and address once again this season.
On the other side of the field: Oakland went 2-2 ATS in the 2009 pre-season; so far this year its gone 2-1 ATS, winning both ATS and SU in Weeks one and two, but falling 28-24 to the 49′ers last week as 1 1/2 point favorites.
Bruce Gradkowski had a solid outing last week after starter Jason Campbell went down with in jury; he threw for 202 yards with two TD’s.
The Raiders backup looked fantastic against the 49′ers first team defense; San Fran allowed three TD’s and committed ten penalties.
Coach Tom Cable on his teams effort; “There’s too many ups and downs in this football game for us to be who we need to be to succeed,” Cable said. “A lot to learn from it, and that’s a good thing. I’m glad it happened now as opposed to a few weeks from now.”
“It felt like just where I left off,” Gradkowski said. “It was exciting. It feels so great to be out there and playing and competing. We have a really good football team and we’re excited about it.”
Bottom line: The Seahawks led 13-10 after three quarters last week, but Seattle’s reserves allowed two TD’s in the final quarter; “We played really solid for three quarters, and again like last week our guys that were in at the end can’t hold a lead,” coach Pete Carroll said. “So that’s unfortunate.”
Expect the Oakland reserves to better the Seattle backups; home field advantage also can’t be overlooked in this case; consider a second look at the RAIDERS in this situation.

The Cincinnati Bengals are quietly going about their business. While Baltimore looks like a real Super Bowl contender and Pittsburgh is trying to figure out life at least for a quarter of a season without Ben Roethlisberger, the Bengals appear to be able to improve upon last year’s quick playoff exit.
The offense has more weapons for Carson Palmer and the defense has greater depth. What to look for tonight from Cincy is road teams after two or more consecutive straight up wins in week four of the preseason are 44-16 ATS the last 17 years, including 9-2 ATS since 2008.

The Houston Texans get a nationally televised game on CBS tonight in their first home game of the preseason. The two teams are obvious geographical rivals and meet again in Week 3 in the regular season. After being embarrassed in New Orleans last week where they allowed 300+ yards to the Saints in the first half of a 38-20 loss, the Texans’ toughness is being questioned. Keep your eyes on DE Mario Williams who was criticized for his play as he goes against Dallas’s new LT, Doug Free.
Dallas is still missing two starting offensive linemen while Houston has cluster injuries in the linebacking corps.
The Cowboys have not come with a 100% effort in their dress rehearsal game under Wade Phillips going a perfect 0-3 against the spread. The first-team Dallas offense finally scored their first touchdown last week against San Diego. However, that “big drive” started at the Chargers’ eight-yard line after the Cowboy defense returned a fumble 80 yards. The Cowboys have scored 16, 9, and 16 points in preseason games.
With the Cowboys playing in the Hall of Fame game, this is their fourth preseason game. They have been in camp longer than any other team and even Coach Phillips has called the team “tired”.

Andy Reid has not been a ‘bet on’ coach in the preseason over the years, concerned more with player development than with winning August games. But Reid has one personal caveat that has been worth betting on a yearly basis – he wants his Eagles to look good winning the regular season walk-through here in Week 3.
The numbers don’t lie. Reid has guided the Eagles to SU victories in Week 3 of the preseason every year since 2003, reeling off seven consecutive wins in this particular role. It’s surely worth noting that their 2002 Week 3 walkthrough loss to New England was a spread covering defeat; a one point loss. Clearly, Andy Reid cares about winning at least one preseason game every year.
The Philadelphia Eagles first string offense has yet to score a touchdown this preseason. They’re expected to sit next week in the preseason finale, ramping up the pressure for a good performance tonight. Wide receiver DeSean Jackson: “We feel like we have a task to go out there and put some points on the scoreboard. As the #1 offense, that’s what’s expected out of us.”
Quarterback Kevin Kolb chimed in: “We still want to score touchdowns. The opportunities have been there for us, but we’ve been beating ourselves. We just have to tighten things up a little bit.” With Philly’s starters expected to play as much as three full quarters tonight, they’ll have ample opportunity to ‘tighten things up’ and put some points on the board.
Todd Haley has been the Chiefs head coach for six previous preseason games, dating back to last year. Kansas City is 0-6 SU in those ballgames. While Haley has preached ‘developing a winning attitude’ to his squad, those results simply haven’t showed up on the scoreboard, indicating a prevailing attitude of nonchalance towards these preseason contests. That puts us squarely on the Eagles side tonight. 2* Take Philadelphia.

Look at the offensive firepower in this one. Do you think the way the Chargers second and third QBs are playing that they will score late ro be a sprkplug for additional points in garbage time? Do you think the coaches will give Rivers ANY time in the second half with no backup in case of injury? Come on now, this is still preseason boys! Expect Pat Ramsey for the Saints to get a TON of time tonight after Brees tears up the Chargers. Looking across the depth charts and the board, and where this is played, and the depth at RB, the Saints are a clear choice, although the line seems obvious, I have no other way I can look based on what I have seen from the Chargers to date.
